The DIII-D National Fusion Facility is the U.S.-'s principal magnetically confined fusion research facility, focusing on the exciting science of the burning plasma state and its control in preparation for ITER, and developing the path to self-driven steady-state operation for future fusion reactors. It has a strong focus on underlying science, and the application of this to pioneer innovating approach to improve fusion performance.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Sciences Manager to coordinate the development plans to secure the future of the facility with compelling new physics goals and improved capabilities. It would report to the DIII-D Deputy Director, also working closely with the DIII-D Director, the Directors and personnel of Science and Ops Divisions in developing this vision. The successful applicant will stimulate and help conceive innovative ideas and engagement from both research and engineering staff, overseeing projects on both sides to establish a compelling case for viable implementation. Such activity will range from supervising physics discussion and simulation to overseeing engineering analysis and projects. A hands-on approach (or close oversight thereof) is encouraged to support the manufacture and installation of test components, prototypes and sensors, alongside close engagement with scientific arguments.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The principle role is to coordinate a range of activities and projects to identify potential future long range developments at the facility.
• Work closely with the DIII-D management to develop overall strategy and process for long range development, proactively making recommendations, and providing a central point of reference and coordination on supporting projects.
• The principle task will be to form and coordinate a range of analysis project teams across physics and ops division, including:
  • Facility developments and innovative technology approaches to secure the physics case for facility based on ITER and pilot plant goals.
  • Coordination of special projects (under general oversight of Ops division) to identify and reduce long range major risks to the facility.
  • In support of these goals, the jobholder will coordinate DIII-D related internal GA R&D projects, working under the MFE IR&D leader and the DIII-D Director to identify, agree and plan suitable tasks.
  • In some cases projects may proceed to hardware prototyping or installations, which the jobholder may also supervise (in consultation with Ops division).
  • Coordinate program-wide activities to gather input from the DIII-D team and identify the key research questions and means to address them.
  • Provide reporting from long range development to document potential developments, and material to support outreach and proposal of such developments to DIII-D stakeholders.
  • At a lower level, continue to engage in key physics leadership that plays a crucial role in GA-'s portfolio (such as leadership and staff supervision on disruption mitigation).
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.
